Introduction and Project Overview
Application Health Insights (AHI)
Application Health Insights (AHI) is an internal Optum/UnitedHealth Group dashboard that monitors the health of software applications critical to UHC's operations. Engineers complete structured assessments every six months—their responses directly impact application health scores.
This case study explores the redesign of the "Create Assessment" feature, a tool used by Product Managers to build these evaluation questionnaires. Despite serving only one primary user, the interface had a significant organizational impact.

The Problem
The original assessment creation interface was designed by developers. At the time, a UX redesign seemed unnecessary—only one person would use it regularly. But the interface became a critical bottleneck.
User Research & Discovery
The Approach
Rather than broad studies (unnecessary with one primary user), I conducted focused discovery:
- Observed the PM creating an assessment from start to finish
- Asked about pain points, workflows, and workarounds
- Identified both needs and "nice-to-haves"
Design & Solution
Information Architecture

I developed this flow following my initial meeting with the PM. Despite having limited context at the time, I wanted to map out a few preliminary ideas for improvement—these are indicated by the dotted lines.

Step 1: Assessment Details
Users start by entering assessment metadata: name, description, validity period, status, and selection criteria.
Step 2: Assessment Details
Key improvement: All questions visible in a list with searchable filters, + button functionality to add questions, and prominent question IDs. Copy ID feature. Questions can be sorted by creation date. The interface shows at a glance which questions have been assigned.
Step 3:  Preview & Save
Users review the assessment in read-only mode before finalizing. This matches how engineers will see it.
Step 3 (Reordering): Drag & Drop
Preserved drag-and-drop: Users can reorder questions directly in the preview. The drag handle is clearly visible, and the interaction is reliable. We fixed the broken interaction rather than removing this powerful affordance.
